How Annotator works

Annotator has no connection to your AI chat. You copy the text and the answer yourself, so you decide what you pass on.

  1. Paste a text or select a PDF, Word or text file. Scanned PDFs are read with text recognition.

  2. Press “Replace personal data”. Annotator replaces the personal data it detects with placeholders such as [PERSON_1]. Check the result. If something is missing, select it in the text: Annotator replaces it everywhere. Then copy the text with placeholders.

  3. Paste the text with placeholders into an AI chat of your choice and ask your question. After that, copy the answer.

  4. Switch to “Insert original data” and paste the answer. With one click, Annotator inserts the original data again in your browser. This step is free of charge.

What Annotator does not store

Annotator detects the personal data on a server in Switzerland. Your text and your files are processed there only for the detection and are not kept afterwards: we neither store nor log your text or the text with placeholders.

The assignment of placeholders to the original data stays in the memory of your browser tab. When you close the tab, it is deleted. It is not stored on our servers.

You ask your question directly in the AI chat, and Annotator never sees it. You paste the answer into Annotator, and your browser inserts the original data. The answer is not sent to our server.

Frequently asked questions

Is the text anonymous after processing?
No. Annotator pseudonymizes the text: personal data is replaced with placeholders and the content remains. Rare details can still allow conclusions about a person. Please check the text before you pass it on. Whether you may pass it on is for you to decide.
Which details does Annotator detect?
Names and other details about persons, contact details, addresses and places, dates and ages, organizations, and identification numbers such as the AHV number, IBAN and UID number. This includes Swiss formats such as postal codes, municipalities and cantons. For AHV numbers, IBAN and UID, Annotator verifies the check digit.
Does Annotator also work with French and Italian texts?
Yes, but detection works best with German texts. For French and Italian texts the results are currently less reliable. Annotator shows a notice when a text does not appear to be in German.
What if a name is not replaced?
Select the name on the left, in “Your text”. A small window suggests a type, which you accept with one click, or you pick another one. Annotator replaces the name everywhere it occurs and inserts it again when you insert the original data into the answer. You can undo a correction from the “Corrections” list or on the value itself.
What can I use the text with placeholders for?
Anywhere you can paste text: an AI chat, a translation service or an email to someone else. Annotator is connected to none of them. If an answer comes back with placeholders, paste it under “Insert original data”. Annotator then puts your data back in.
Where is my work saved?
Only in the open browser tab. It is kept when you reload the page and deleted when you close the tab. We cannot restore it.
Do I need an account?
Yes. You sign in with your email address and a code that we send to you. You do not need a password.
Who is behind Annotator?
VectorAgency GmbH, a Swiss company. VectorAgency also develops DOBY, a desktop app for the pseudonymization of documents in social work, healthcare and legal services (its website is in German).
